On the planet Mithris, humanity is caught in a terrible war . . . and the gods don’t care. Serena is an eighteen year-old girl who doesn’t care about the gods. She just wants to be left alone. Unfortunately for Serena, a strange girl named Natalie Bliss falls out of the sky with an urgent mission Serena must help her stop the war and save the world. Natalie claims to have been sent by the Pantheon (the deities who run the universe) to confront the negligent gods of Mithris. The gods need to intervene before mankind destroys itself—and Serena has a vital role in Natalie’s plan. Serena is thrust into a supernatural world that she never believed in, and she demands to know why she was chosen. Natalie won’t tell her—yet. When the truth is revealed, Serena must choose between walking away . . . or uniting her fate with the survival of mankind. As the girls get closer to the Tower of the Gods, they face terrifying assassins, raging infernos, and falling bombs. Secrets surround them as Serena tries to discover her true identity—and unravel the mystery of the red-haired girl who carries a magical umbrella. The girls hope that the gods will answer their plea for help, but they may already be too late. Betrayal stalks among the gods of Mithris, and the traitor has dangerous secrets that could destroy them all. The clock is ticking for Serena and Natalie—and for the world itself.

Steven Thorne's first novel must be viewed as such. A first step into the literary world of long (sometimes too long) fiction. Ultimately it is a very enjoyable read, perhaps leaving a little more to be desired in certain areas. To me, the ending felt rushed. It seemed like the author needed to conclude the book, and conclude it quickly, which makes the level of writing at the end not quite on par with the rest of the text, which is very well written.I also would have liked to have gotten more information about the mythology surrounding Mithris, the planet the book takes place on. I just like mythology though. To go along with that, the powers of the Gods could have been better defined, because we never really know what they are capable of, especially in a mythology which is an amalgamation of many real mythologies. One thing I did find particularly striking was the power of the Phoenix Guardian herself, and the interesting ideas the novel raises about the power of words. Made all the more striking by the fact that the work itself consists entirely of words.
I also would have like certain character to have been more fleshed out, especially Julius, who's actions sometimes caught me by surprise because they didn't correspond to my already formed definition of him. Natalie's character was a shining star throughout the novel, but I disliked the jumping of focus from Serena to Natalie; I wished one had remained the consistent focus throughout their segments of the story just to better develop them.
The story itself is fast and compelling and a very easy read. I would highly recommend it to fans of the genre, and the public at large who might be looking for a quick read. Steven has a beautiful way of crafting his stories that makes a person feel immediately at home, even in the ominous Assembly of the Gods. There are parts that moved me to the brink of tears, especially the tale of Eugene, the teddy bear, and his owner, who's name was spelled wrong. Those are the parts where Steven is at his best, creating real home grown family feelings and closeness.
All in all, I thoroughly enjoyed this book and cannot wait to read it again.

The Phoenix Guardian Steven Thorn 9781470165925 Books Reviews
Enjoyed the book.
Steven's first novel (young adult, fantasy) introduces us to a new world with a pantheon of gods who leave much to be desired; but, Serena and Natalie are quite compelling as they seek to save the world. The book has humorous scenes as well as sad and moving ones. It combines the whimsy of Mary Poppins with the fantasy and magic of Harry Potter. Unlike the previous reviewer, I found the lack of walruses quite refreshing and am pleased to rate this book five out of five umbrellas.
Steven Thorn was able to craft a brilliant universe full of both magic and mythology. As a huge fan of the Harry Potter, Percy Jackson, Kane Chronicles, and Heroes of Olympus series, I can honestly say this is one of the best young adult fantasy novels I have read.
With plenty of humor, tragedy, drama, and suspense, this book will be hard to put down.
The one thing I liked the most that was different than all the other books in this genre was the attitude of the main character. In Harry Potter, Percy Jackson, and most other similar titles, the main character is always so willing and accepting of their supernatural abilities and responsibilities. Not Serena. She tries as hard as possible to deny her real life and run away from it. That makes her seem more real and relatable than other characters in similar books.
Overall, I am incredibly pleased with this book and am eagerly awaiting the sequel.
I wanted to like this book, I really did. The concepts underlying the universe of the novel are unique and very interesting. However, the plot was predictable, the characters were one-dimensional and not terribly likeable, and the writing was somewhat juvenile. That all said, I enjoyed it as a quick read and I'm sure most young adults and not a few adults would enjoy this fantasy.
Phoenix Guardian is an exciting and well-plotted novel that demonstrates Steven Thorn's impressive talent for storytelling. I was particularly pleased that he chose to create a female protagonist for his story and a female guardian close to the same age as Serena. Understandably, Serena is confused about her parentage and the events of the novel, but Thorn captures perfectly the emotional roller-coaster that is otherwise known as adolescence. He also weaves together the threads of the story with a sense of pacing that is natural and not forced. The world of the gods is intriguing and recalls Achilles' refusal to continue fighting in Troy (although Achilles seems more petty--Julius has lost his wife and daughter after all). I look forward to reading more from this talented author.
