AgMotiv is a manufacturer of manure spreaders whose hourly employees are represented by the United General Laborers International (UGLI) union, in a right-to-work state (union membership optional). Meet Travis Tee, the shop union business agent, who suffers from a mild case of Tourette's Syndrome and entertains frequent vivid fantasies about being a world renown union leader. Dewey Dumphrey, is a dimwitted shop steward with single goal of impressing Travis Tee. Anita Kloo, is the only female shop steward who hates men and sees any action taken against her or other women as sexual harassment or gender discrimination. On the opposite side are the non-union members including Toivo Jurva, a likeable and imaginative shop employee. Travis Tee struggles to keep his union local relevant in the face of an increasing level of job satisfaction within the hourly ranks. Anita Kloo adds to his headaches when she makes a federal case over an accidental bump from a non-union coworker in the company cafeteria igniting a battle between the union members and a rebellious group of scabs. Then his life takes an unexpected turn for the worse while walking a picket line.

Well, I never thought I would read a book that would bring back sooooooo many memories! It was scary!

Lee has the ability of creating characters that are eerily similar to real live people, especially his fanatical union characters......you love some and hate others. If only real life has the payba......oooopps, I don't want to give it away!

Great read! I recommend this book to all HR and ER students; read it before your enter their realm........then make the decision to work there....

Labored Relations Lee D Rorman Books Reviews

I enjoyed the book. It was hard to put down. The character development was very good, you felt real emotions. I work with Unions so I could identify with the interactions between the union and non-union characters. I could picture the union employees with their hats and jackets on.
I wasn't exactly sure what to expect when I began reading, but it turned out to be great! The book had an awesome mix of witty humor and seriousness. You definitely feel sympathy and hatred towards the characters. 10 out of 10 would recommend to a friend!
Great character development ! Some you loved and some characters garnered frustration and little empathy. The title is perfect! I knew very little about labor unions and did not expect it to be so interesting, sad and funny.
I was prepared not to like this thinking it would not be interesting to me but I soon changed my opinion after reading only a couple chapters. Very well done and loved all the characters! Seemed to be able to identify with them all in previous work places.
I thought the book was great. I found the characters to be very colorful and interesting. He mixes his experiences as a Human Relations employee with comedy and lightheartedness.

I look forward to seeing more works from Lee Rorman.
Definitely entertaining and certainly a unique story line and subplots. It's apparent that Rorman has a solid knowledge of the workings of a unionized industrial operation, which makes for a great backdrop. The antics of the characters are quirky, ironic and often hilarious. With this being Rorman's first novel, I was especially impressed with the character development and how the subplots seemed to fit together effortlessly. I purchased the book for my e-reader, which has a great bargain at $3.99. I am looking forward to more of Rorman's work.
This first novel is difficult to categorize. Is it an expose? Is it comic? Is it a tragedy? Is it a diatribe against unionism or an indictment against insensitive management? The answer is yes to all, and more too. For someone versed in the politics of an industrial plant, the novel will ring true. For someone not versed in plant politics, Rorman's explanation through characters and actions make it understandable. The characters are believable. The dialogue sounds and feels real. The plot has twists and turns. One wonders how Rorman is going to tie up all these loose ends. But he does it with style in the end. This first novel is well worth a read.
