If you like English history, or political intrigue, you should definitely buy this book. One of Sabatini's "minor" masterpieces, this tells the story of a group of Jabobite plotters (for King James II, in exile in France) who want to overthrow King William of Orange, a Dutchman married to James' daughter Mary and who became King through the Glorious Revolution (when the Brits decided they'd had more than enough of the Stuarts, thank you very much). Through the well-paced novel moves the cool, mysterious figure of Colonel Dudley Walton, one of the most interesting heroes of any book I've read. Whose side is he on, if any?One of the great virtues of Sabatini as a writer (other than his unique and amazing way of telling a rousing story), is the way he hews to the facts of history as we know them. His research is meticulous and impeccable. His eye for detail is like an eagle's. His short, pithy remarks that sum up the character of someone is enviable...I wish I could write like that! "For Lochmore's father had been possessed of an affectation for scholarship, and he had assembled and displayed here the outward signs of an inwardly absent grace of mind." There's an economy and a vividness in that one sentence that, I'm sure, evokes for each of us someone we know who's just like that.
Another of Sabatini's great virtues is the sheer volume of his work (31 novels, all of which are good and 27 or so are great) combined with the wide range of history he's completely at home in...from the 1400's in Italy to the French revolution. If you like this, check out Bellarion, another one of the overlooked masterpieces. Yes, there are his "Big Books" turned into movies with Errol Flynn (how can you lose?)...Captain Blood, The Sea Hawk and Scaramouche (probably his best...how can you resist an author who can make you laugh about the French Revolution?) and they each have 100 reviews. But Sabatini is much more than those, and this book, for instance, is much better than Captain Blood, which has a combined rating close to 5 stars.

The Strolling Saint Rafael Sabatini 9781519113214 Books Reviews
Another uneven novel written while Sabatini still seemed to be learning his craft. There are bits in the end and the beginning worthy of the mature Sabatini; but not much happens in the middle, at least by his usual standards--he seems to be aiming for a different genre and audience. The writing livens up at the end, but the plotting remains weak, and the ending is preposterous.
Sabatini has a way of not letting you put the book down. One is propelled by the story, with surprising revelations and unexpected changes in plot.
Good history, great story, and a timely moral about the evils of zealotry.
